Ponderosa Pine, Angels Landing, 1994.
Zion National Park, Utah
At the end of the grueling hike to the top of Zion National
Park's Angels Landing, this lone Ponderosa Pine overlooks the steep and
twisting Zion Canyon far below. This photograph is a study of values and textures.
The intensely textured bark of the tree was of prime interest to me. The
tree was placed close to center instead of off to one side (which would
have resulted in a more "sentimental and scenic" image) in order
to emphasize the contrasts of textures and revelation of space. My assistant
held a low-hanging branch out of the way of the Schneider 121mm Super Angulon lens on my 4x5 view camera. The atmosphere
was actually very hazy, but careful printing with a strong SCIM mask to
emphasize shadow contrast yields a print which exhibits clear and rich values.
I also locally applied a special formulation of print bleach to balance
out some values and increase highlight contrast in some of the distant sunlit
ridges. This photograph was made into a duotone black and white poster for Zion National Park.
