Aaron brought this eloquent composition to the workshop several years ago. His main problem in successfully printing this image was to burn some slight detail and tone into the bright washed-out face of the large boulder. Standard burning methods were very tedious and usually showed a halo around the bright area as a result of burning "spill over". We made a photographic burn mask designed to easily burn just the bright rock face without touching any adjacent values. This mask was sandwiched with the original negative in a pin-registration carrier and then used to selectively burn the rock highlight to the point of revealing subtle texture and tonality.
