This image was shot along a backcountry trail in the
North Cascades while on a backpacking trip. The camera was rotated
above the subject until a pleasing composition was found. A 4x5 black
cutout card helped me visualize the composition of the image as well.
I used an orange filter to maximize the separation between the yellow
leaf and the surrounding granite. When printing, I use an unsharp
mask coupled with a grade 3 paper. This helps enhance the crisp edges
of the leaf and allows good detail to show in the dark rocks and moss.
Because of the higher grade paper, the brilliance of the leaf, in
terms of highlight contrast, is maximized. A slight selenium-brown
tone helps maintain luminous values in this print.
